Residents of Sangenyi in Werugha Ward have been urged to focus on commercial farming focusing on crops that are drought resistance a move that will change their livelihoods and boost their economy.
Speaking when he handed over 2,500 grafted apple mango seedlings and 7,000 tajirika cassava cuttings to 210 households, Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja said his administration is keen on improving food security through empowering small scale farmers across the County.
"What we have done for Sangenyi people today is a step towards ensuring that we achieve food security and boost the farmers’ incomes," Samboja said.
His sentiments were echoed by the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation Davis Mwangoma saying the department is focused on achieving the 5 key points in the Governor's manifesto, Agriculture being one of them.
"Our main aim is to achieve the Governor's manifesto on food security. Sangenyi area is among areas that can feed the County should we focus on the right type of farming," said Mwangoma.
Area Ward MCA who is also the leader of Majority Jason Tuja said Sangenyi area can be very productive when farmers focus more on planting drought resistance crops.
"The seedlings and the cassava cuttings that have been handed to the farmers today will change the economy of this area, we have great potential in producing mangoes and cassava in large volumes that we will supply across the region. This is a game changer to the livelihoods of our people," Tuja said.
