taveta townTaveta has become the first area of administration in the new dispensation to be awarded the town status.
In a speech during the colourful function in Taveta bus pack, the county governor John Mruttu observed that this is a remarkable step towards enabling the towns to operate effectively. "We have devolved decision making to the town level for efficient management of town affairs. I further endorse market management by traders themselthrough their elected market committees," mentioned the delighted governor.
Among services to be offered by the town include; street lighting, abattoirs, refuse collection, guest house, animal control and welfare, solid waste management, historical monuments. The governor also aspires to lower the number of markets in Taveta Town to two so as to concentrate the opportunities for traders while improving the choice for buyers and saving travel costs. Devolution and Administration CECM Mrs. Linet Mavu said that resources are devolved to town to improve infrastructure and welfare of the town occupants. Under urban areas and cities act No. 13 of 2011, an area shall be eligible for the grant of the status if:
a) it has a population of at least two thousand residents according to the final gazetted results of the latest population census carried out,
(b) Demonstrable economic, functional and financial viability;
(c) The existence of an integrated development plan in accordance with the Act;
(d) The capacity to effectively and efficiently deliver essential services to its residents,
(e) Sufficient space for expansion.
