busia countyThe African Development Bank (AFDB) and Korean Exim Bank will finance the Sh5.7billion Kocholia - Amagoro - Amoni Multipurpose water resources and food crop development project. Project manager for Kocholia – Amagoro - Amoni Horticultural and Food Crops Value Chain Development Project Comas Muli said the AFDB and Korean Exim Bank will provide financial assistance for the multipurpose water resource development project. Mr. Muli said they were in Busia for a scoping exercise, adding that the time frame of the project will take five years and it is expected to start in 2018.He said the project consists a dam which will be 43m high able to hold 66.9million cubic metres of water to put about 2000 hectares of land under irrigation and agriculture. He said the project will address food and water security, adding that the overall purpose of the mission was to discuss and assess a wide variety of issues relevant for the preparation of the project. The bank team held discussions with Acting Busia County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment and Natural Resources Bernard Yaite. Also present included officials from Ministry of Water, National Treasury, Nile Basin Initiative and Busia County Government. Yaite said the project, when complete, will solve water problems in Teso North and Teso South, adding that the components to be generated will include irrigation, water supply and water shade management and others. He is grateful of the co-operation between the County Government and the bank in the project. "Horticulture, fruits and processing will be realised, factories will come which will create job opportunities for the county residents. Roads will be built and there will be good things forthcoming."
