Tatita Taveta sportsTaita Taveta County Government has sponsored the first cross country event in its bid to boost sports across the county while improving the livelihood of talented youth. Speaking at Danson Mwanyumba Stadium in Wundanyi the Deputy Governor H.E Majala Mlagui said the county government is determined to support youth in order to enable them earn a living through their myriad of talents. "Our main agenda today is to support youth to become independent and harness their full potential .Through games and sports one can earn a living hence support their family," said H.E Majala.
She added that the county government is inviting interested stakeholders in the games and sports industry for collaboration to revamp the sector and enable sterling performance. Panuel Mkungo who has been tirelessly training in Kapsabet urged talented youth to start working on their talents saying he has been supporting his mother and siblings through hard work in athletics.
“I urge fellow youth to become serious and start working on what they believe they are talented in. I tell you I have been supporting my family through athletics and my future depends on my talent,” Said Mkungo.
Recently when receiving Mr. Panuel Mkungo the Philadelphia based athlete who hails from Mwatate Sub County, Governor Granton Samboja pledged to facilitate the formation of County Government football and marathon team which will be fully supported by the county government. A promise that had been kept. Athlete's and players who make the cut will be employed by the County Government. Addressing the media County Assembly Chair for Gender, Sports and Persons Living with Disabilities Hon. Jackson Nyambu said plans are underway to sponsor a bill to secure the jobs of the team members even after a change in regime. “The bill I am going to sponsor will legislate on the terms of engagement of the team members. The legislative arm is very willing to work hand in hand with the Executive to improve lives of Datuzens,” said Nyambu.
In men cross country the renowned Kenyan athlete Mr Panuel Mkungo emerged the winner followed by Lameck Mwakio and Samuel Katuu all born and raised in Mwatate Sub-County. Mary Mwakima from Mwatate led the women team followed closely by Teresia Paul from Taveta and finally Mercelinah Mwadime of Mwatate finished in position three.
According to the County Executive Committee Member for Youth, Gender, Sports & Social Services Mr. Bigvai Mwailemi said the top three individuals from all categories will embark on an intensive training in preparation for future events starting with Coast Region athletics which will take place on Saturday 3rd February.
He said his department is determined to produce the best sports men and women in national teams as well as striving to join international record. Soon the county government will commence selecting the best 30 footballers out of the four teams selected during the trials. Others present include Wundanyi MP Hon. Danson Mwashako, Athletics Kenya Coast Region Chair Mr. Dimmy Kimoni, County ministers for Trade, Tourism and cooperatives Hon. Getrude Shuwe, Hon. Daniel Makoko (Education), Hon. Dr. Frank Mwangemi (Health Services) and several other county staffs serving in different capacities.
